That line above is one of the most beautiful lines I've ever heard in any film. This 1951 comedy feature is free of Fellini's quintessential surrealist vision but filled with the delights of idiosyncratic imagery, genius comical precision, and indisputable humanity.
The film opens in Rome, where a newlywed small-town couple is vacationing on their honeymoon. While in Rome, the (very) young bride takes advantage of being near the location where a new film is being shot that stars The White Sheik, a popular film/serial/newspaper icon whom she is secretly infatuated with. While her husband is sleeping, she sneaks off to find the Sheik and give him a drawing she has made of him. Brunella Bovo, who plays the bride, is new to me, but she was absolutely entrancing in her innocence. Trieste's comic expressions are absolutely arresting. Sordi is hilarious as the Sheik, who is about as unromantic a romantic figure as you can imagine.
Nino Rota's first score for Fellini is a lot of fun and exceptionally carnivalesque. You can tell by the marriage of music and image that Fellini and Rota had a real treasured creative hit-off with this film, and as most know, Rota scored every Fellini film after "White Sheik" until his death in 1979. This great score has never been released in it's entirety, but the main title theme has appeared on many Rota compilations.
An absolutely adorable little film, which seems to have been regrettably ignored by the majority. It's one I will watch many times.

None-the-less, Fellini comes out of the gate swinging for his freshman solo outing as a director. Here, already, he is the circus ring leader, the maestro of chaotic life, a wicked comedian of the absurd, transitioning from his past as a strip cartoonist effortlessly to motion and sound without losing any of his inherent sense of mayhem. What he has not yet fully developed is his deep pathos and sadness as this is a more kind-hearted, lenient dig at fandom fantasy clashing with… THE WHITE SHEIK is a delightfully charming little tale. A pulpy romance that plays with fantasy and reality in the context of a graceless marriage. I had a lot of fun with this one. Fellini doing situational comedy brought such a satisfying blend of farce and silent-movie flourishes to the screen, at times even feeling like Chaplin. If his first film VARIETY LIGHTS (1950) towed the line between somber neorealism and dreamy carnival, SHEIK avoids all trace of sadness and just goes for full-throttle adventure and entertainment. That's not to say the film is merely frivolous or lacking intelligence. You can see the auteur starting to explore his "Life is a dream" motif, along with the misleading line that separates… As somebody who has, as a starry-eyed teenager, tried to meet an idol with fan art in hand and gotten her heart dashed to a million pieces by a rude encounter, I feel this movie. I like that Fellini doesn’t judge his young bride for her obsessions. Nobody is ever trying to set her up for disappointment, in fact they empower her to such a degree she’s like the dog that caught its tail. I’m only disappointed this doesn’t end with us seeing her in the fotoromanzo!!! Charming leads, fun sets, great soundtrack as always. My grandmother had a lot of the fotoromanzo magazines which I liked to look at as a kid without understanding any of the text but it wasn't until I, like many other white males my age discovered 's take on them in various issues of WEIRDO did I learn to appreciate the format. Antonioni has a short documentary film on the subject from a year before this and even contributed to the script of the White Sheik. A great Giulietta Masina cameo and all 3 lead performances are excellent but Leopoldo Trieste steals the show and is hilarious distracting his highly respected family from discovering his soon-to-be bride left behind a letter with plans to meet the fotoromanzo star of her dreams and is now missing with their wedding by the Pope just a day away. Lotta fun, really enjoyable. Federico Fellini's debut. I'm not sure people would still be watching this over-antic Purple Rose of Cairo prototype if it wasn't the first step on the way to one of the greatest careers in European cinema history, but its take on pop culture and female fandom is interestingly warm and sympathetic. This movie may have Fellini's name slapped onto it, but it's a typical 50's rom-com at heart. The acting isn't all that special, the story isn't anything inventive either (I mean, I wasn't expecting anything in this department anyway, and for all I know it could have been fresh for the Italians living during this time), but I do have to give The White Sheik props for being so charming. Diverte tuttora e non è invecchiato di un secondo. Fellini always had a knack for casting. The comedy works, because the newlyweds pass for an ordinary Italian couple. Only a starry-eyed, small-town girl would fall in love with a celebrity that looks and dresses like Sordi. Opened March 13 and closed March 17. This would be a serviceable light comedy for just about any filmmaker. Because it is an early movie from a renowned director, there is always the temptation to look for more in it than might be there. I think Fellini would do a better job of nailing his satirical targets in later movies (especially 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita). That said, this is a totally pleasant way to spend 90 minutes or so. I got to see it projected on a big screen and that added to the experience as well. So scheinen auch Ivan und Wanda sich noch nicht wirklich zu kennen und sind gleichzeitig zu scheu, um miteinander ehrlich zu kommunizieren. Fellini, Rom und das Leben nach dem Krieg Nachdem Federico Fellini mit Alberto Lattuada die Gaukler-Romanze Lichter des Varieté (1950) inszeniert hatte, legte er mit Der weiße Scheich zwei Jahre später sein Solo-Debüt vor. Zum Filmemacher herangereift war er zuvor unter dem großen Roberto Rosselini, einem Meister des Neorealismus, der im italienischen Kino der Nachkriegszeit lange vorherrschte. Am Ende steht die Erkenntnis, dass sie aufeinander angewiesen sind und miteinander kommunizieren müssen. Aber es ist alles nur Show, die Damen sind nur Statisten © Studiocanal Home Entertainment Unser Fazit zu Der weiße Scheich Zu seiner Zeit wurde Federico Fellinis Erstlingswerk von der Kritik zerrissen, man warf ihm vor grobschlächtig und minderwertig zu sein. Die Art des ehemaligen Cartoonisten, Freude und Leid, Illusion und Ernüchterung beinahe übergangslos nebeneinander zu stellen, stieß damals zweifellos vielen sauer auf. Man erwartete sich vom Neorealismus mehr als nur die vorgeblich banalen Belange junger Frischvermählter. Doch schon sein nächster Film Die Müßiggänger (1953) gewann bei den Filmfestspielen in Venedig den silbernen Löwen und brachte Fellini seinen Durchbruch als Regisseur. Der weiße Scheich gehört sicherlich nicht zu den besten Werken des Meisterregisseurs, lässt jedoch gut erahnen, wohin es für ihn in Zukunft gehen sollte. Rom spielte immer eine große Rolle für Fellini. Durch seine Straßen schickte er arme und reiche, liebende, gefrustete, hoffnungsvolle und manchmal auch fehlgeleitete Seelen, um diese Momentaufnahmen ihres Lebens mit der Kamera einzufangen. Genau das macht er auch hier, unvoreingenommen, unbeschwert, ein guter Beobachter. Wer also mal sehen möchte, wie ein Genie seine Arbeit aufnimmt, eine Fingerübung tätigt, bevor er zu Größeren voranschreitet, kommt an Der weiße Scheich kaum vorbei. Aber auch abseits des filmhistorischen Kontexts ist dies eine leichte, aber auch nachdenkliche Komödie über die Fehlbarkeit von Träumen und den ernüchternden, aber dennoch notwendigen Schritt in die Realität.
